focusrite scarlett 2i2 - input device recognised on DAW but not output device

Driver Scarlett 2i2

mac os x 10.11
scarlett 2i2
ableton 9/logic pro 9
when i go to choose my input device on my DAW (i have tried both ableton and logic) my scarlett 2i2 is recognised however the only option i may choose for the output device is the core audio/built-in output. the scarlett is recognised also by my mac in system preferences only as an input device.
this means: i can't get any signal into the DAW or out.
i feel i've tried a lot of troubleshooting problems ie. changing cables, changing usb ports, re-starting DAW, deleting certain packaging
is there something obvious i've missed here?
any help would be greatly appreciated!
