iZotope’s RX audio repair toolkit is certainly in demand among anyone dealing with sounds recorded in less than ideal conditions. It’s a staple in film sound post-production, and rightfully so! The Cambridge, MA company is set to release RX 6, the latest version, on April 20, 2017. Details are scarce, but we have learned that iZotope is extending RX’s reach to regular audio producers tasked with cleaning up recorded material. Features like mic de-rustling, dialogue isolation, and wind rumble removal are now go-to functionality, rather than something one’d do on their own with the tools provided.

The same goes for treating typical recording problems like mic bleed, sibilance, mouth clicks and breaths. Will RX 6 be able to tame a nervous singer better than a round of tequila? It might just be, as iZotope says it’s introducing its best de-esser ever with this release. We’ll have to see how it stands against excellent plug-ins like the Eiosis E2Deeser.

Design Philosophy

The RX 6 Audio Editor is a visual, selection-based editing environment. Most of its user interface is devoted to the Spectrogram/Waveform display, an integral part of the RX editing workflow. The display enables you to refine and visualize your audio, allowing for better recognition and selection of problem areas.

Using the spectrogram to identify audio problems

  • See the Identifying Audio Problems chapter for tips on using the spectrogram to spot common audio issues.
